How to turn a Strava ride into a map print

You have finished the ride and it is sitting on Strava. This is how I turn that file into a map print. Download the GPX on a computer, open the builder, set the colours, stats and size, then order. If you would rather not fiddle with it, I can make the print for you.

Get the GPX from Strava

Do this on a desktop, not in the phone app. If the ride is on your own account, log in on the Strava website, open the activity, and look for a GPX button over the map. Click it, save the file, and you are ready to upload.

If it is someone else's ride, you still need a Strava account. Open the activity on desktop. The same GPX button is usually over the map.

If the button is not there, send me the activity link and I will get the file. Use the contact form and paste the link in the message. I do not need your Strava password, so please do not send one.

There is a short video of this for a ride on your own account in Downloading GPX files from Strava.

Open the builder

Start on the epic cycling map print page. Build Yours takes you to the custom map, which is where you connect Strava or upload the GPX.

Strava only lets the tool see so many rides. If your activity is not in the list, upload the GPX you just saved. For a multi-day trip, add each file. They land in the order you upload them, so reorder them if you want the days, and the profiles, in the order you rode them.

If you need to stop halfway, copy the URL. You can paste it later and pick up the same design. If you send that link to someone else, they can change the map too.

Set the colours, stats and size

You can change the colours and the stats, and choose the size and the text. The text I usually add is the rider's name, distance, time, elevation and the date of the ride.

Prints are A3 at £35 or A2 at £45. Have a proper look at the preview before you order.

Order the print

When the map looks right, check it over and only then check out. Once you are happy, it goes off to print.

If you would rather I made it

If the builder is a faff, or you simply do not have the time, use map design done for you. Contact me first so we can agree the details. Then send the GPX files, the rider's name, the colour scheme and style you want, and anything else that matters: completion time, distance, elevation and the date. I will send a proof before it goes to print.

Buying for someone else, and not sure a map is the right call? The cyclist gift guide covers a map of their ride, or a voucher if you are stuck.
